What is Square Dance…

“Square Dance” is an American folk dance that developed from the European folk dances brought over by immigrants and settlers.

Four couples move in constantly changing formations, such as squares, circles, stars or lines, according to the calls of a “Caller”. The calls also include the names of the figures to be danced. Dancers learn these in a special course and can then execute them automatically on call. There is therefore no need to memorise the sequence of an entire dance. It is also not the movement of the feet that matters most; what counts above all is whether you give your neighbour your right or left hand. As a beginner, you therefore very quickly find your way into brisk and harmonious dancing.

The name and execution of each figure are standardised worldwide. This means dancers can dance together in a “Square” with dancers from other towns, countries, even other continents, without any great difficulty. By tradition, the “Calls” are given in English, although knowledge of English is not a prerequisite for learning “Square Dance”. A little basic knowledge is of course helpful. The music danced to is mostly American Country Music.

“Square Dance” requires a sense of community, concentration and quick reactions from everyone involved. Alcohol is therefore taboo before and during dancing. There are no generation gaps or class differences in “Square Dance”. It is a hobby that brings enjoyment at any age. Rank and titles are left at home. We know no competitions.

Square Dance is friendship, set to music!
